Two Fishing Poles, a Bottle of Wine and a Warm Summer Evening

One of my favorite pastimes in the summer is to go fishing with my friend, Eric. We never really expect to catch much of anything - although carp fishing tackle is some of the best a fisherman can buy. In all honesty, we tend to be a bit startled whenever one of us reels in the line and there's a fish on the hook - as no matter how good the tackle, you still need skill to catch a fish. For us, fishing is more of an excuse to get away from our desks for an evening and head out into the open air. We are both historians, so we try to pretend to get medieval with our fishing, even though we do use modern rods and all. But we do grab a bottle of wine, some bread and some cheese. We'll sit out by a pond, toss in our lines and argue whether it would be more fun to live in medieval times or the industrial age. Finally, if we do catch something, we realize that we prefer living in modern times where we can purchase our fish already cleaned. These nights, we inevitably take the fish home and let his wife take care of the cleaning, gutting and all the dirty business involved with catching a fish. Though to say thanks to her, we do always take care of the cooking.
